How it all started
THIS IS A STORY ABOUT FLOWERS, LOVE, BEAUTY AND FAMILY.
In 2015, I graduated from Graduate School as a scientist in molecular neuroscience. I was excited to take on a position as a post doctoral fellow in Seattle. Reality hit hard when I realized that I had to commute for an hour everyday to get to work, each way, so two hours of my life in the car. This is actually the reality for many, many people near and in the big cities.
My husband and I were planning to start a family but I could not see how I was going to balance work and family. That summer I picked up a Martha Stewart Living Magazine and read through and through an article about a family who had a cut flower farm north of Seattle. The story of Erin, the founder of Floret, sounded like a dream.
I signed up for one of her weekend flower farmer intensive workshops. I didn’t really know what to expect, I knew some things about gardening but molecules were my medium and a sterile laboratory atmosphere my canvas. So, yes it was out of my comfort zone but I was very excited. Soon enough the summer of 2016 arrived and I drove to Mt. Vernon to take the classes. Little did I know that the weekend was going to be life changing.
It was a wonderful experience, the flowers, oh boy, they were nothing like I had ever seen. Fresh, beautiful, blooms and greenery that radiated love. We dove into all things farming, we got our hands dirty after following demos at the farm and they even allowed us to cut flowers to our hearts content. Then we learned some techniques on flower design and arrangements. It was a magical weekend in which I learned a lot, met wonderful talented women and my eyes were opened to a lifestyle that I really didn’t know existed or that it was even possible.
I have always loved flowers, my parents instilled in me the love and care for plants and nature through their ever evolving backyard garden.
During the weekend at floret flower farm I fell in love with flowers all over again. I loved the idea of growing flowers and working from home while racing a family. By then, my husband and I were starting a family, I was three months pregnant when I attended the workshop and I had thought long and hard about how I was going to handle my profession and motherhood. The workshop planted a seed in me, the possibility of having a flower business, growing flowers and our family. I loved the idea of being able to be present with my kids at home while working. Me working in the field, them getting muddy, chasing butterflies or picking wildflowers, and with that image in my mind, I was sold.
I told my husband everything about that weekend, how I had fallen in love with the idea of growing flowers and having a home based business. He fell in love with the idea too. We started to look for a house outside Seattle with some land, we found one. I put the pipettes down. We moved and I picked up the shovel.
For the love of flowers and family, we are at the heart of Maple Valley growing flowers and little humans. We have been testing the waters and learning the past three years and we are happy to launch our business this summer. We hope you enjoy what we share, it is our wish to share love through flowers.
Thank you for joining us in this journey. We hope you enjoy our products.
