Welcome to our online art gallery and our first exhibit. We are delighted to introduce the body of art titled-
Flower Portraits by EstefanÍa M. Dillon.
To me, a flower portrait captures the essence and character of a flower. It is a photographic depiction of the “face” of the flower. In a way, I am anthropomorphizing flowers. My intention is to show you the most beautiful and appealing side of a bloom.
These flower portraits were taken between 2017 - 2020. Each photo holds a unique significance; I will reveal their individual stories and the meaningful conversations surrounding them through out this week. Some are dear to me because they were the first I cultivated at our farm, while others were so flawless that I yearned to preserve their memory. Every portrait narrates a tale, and each picture encapsulates a fleeting moment frozen in time to cherish its beauty. These exceptionally beautiful flowers compelled me to capture their beauty and essence and freeze them for perpetuity.
These photographs are one of a kind; they were taken using Polaroid film. Due to the uniqueness of instant film, each pack of film has its own temperament and sometimes imperfections which creates artistic uniqueness. These photographs are unrepeatable; each photo is a true original.
I began creating Polaroid images and exploring this art form in 2006 during a class on Alternative Methods of Photography taught by the inspiring photographer Melanie Walker. The class offered a fantastic opportunity to experiment with various methods, including Polaroid transfers. Polaroid became one of my favorite films. There is an inexplicable magic in witnessing an image slowly materialize, similar to developing film in a darkroom without the need for a wet lab. The way the chemical reaction brings out a ghost image before the final product emerges is supernatural.
